Old wine traders stage protest against New Excise Policy

JAMMU, Feb 16: The new Excise Policy announced by the Jammu and Kashmir Government has sparked strong opposition from the region’s old wine traders.
During a meeting held today, the traders expressed their frustration, stating that despite numerous discussions with top Government officials, their concerns have not been addressed.
Charanjeet Singh, the former President of the Jammu Wine Traders Association (JWTA), voiced his anger over the policy.
He revealed that he and other traders had met with prominent leaders, including the Deputy Chief Minister, the Minister for Transport and IT, and the Advisor to the Chief Minister, but received only false promises in return.
Singh criticized the new excise policy, claiming it benefits only the wealthy and leaves the livelihood of traditional wine traders in jeopardy.
He appealed directly to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir to reconsider the policy and take the livelihood concerns of the traders into account.
Additionally, Singh shared that in a recent meeting with the Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, he raised the issue, and was assured that the grievance would be looked into.
The JWTA members urged the Government to revisit and revise the excise policy to protect their livelihoods and help them recover from financial difficulties.
