Terror threat puts Champions Trophy 2025 at Risk

ISLAMABAD, Feb 24:
Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau has issued a warning about a potential threat from the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), which plans to kidnap foreigners attending the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for ransom. The terror group is reportedly targeting Chinese and Arab nationals, conducting surveillance at ports, airports, and residential areas frequented by visitors from these countries. ISKP operatives are said to be planning to rent remote properties as safe houses, avoiding areas with surveillance and moving victims under cover of night to evade security forces.
This warning comes amid growing concerns over Pakistan’s ability to secure major international events, with past incidents such as the 2009 Sri Lankan cricket team attack and the 2024 assault on Chinese engineers raising doubts about the country’s security preparedness. Afghanistan’s intelligence agency has also raised alarms about possible ISKP attacks. The warning underscores the heightened risks as Pakistan hosts the Champions Trophy in 2025. (Agencies)
