Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed welcomes PM Modi at airport, drives him to the science museum

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 16 : In a special gesture, Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his arrival at Addis Ababa airport, and later drove him in his car to the science museum in the city.

Prime Minister Modi posted pictures of himself sitting alongside the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed who is seen driving the car.

At the museum, the two leaders are seen exchanging some laughs and also going around the exhibits and listening keenly to the guide.

At Addis Ababa airport, PM Modi took part in a traditional Coffee Ceremony with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

“The ceremony beautifully highlights Ethiopia’s rich heritage,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

On his car trip with the Ethiopian PM, he wrote: “After welcoming me at Addis Ababa airport, Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali drove me to the Science Museum in the city. This Museum showcases different aspects of science and innovation and how they can be harnessed for Ethiopia’s progress.”

Earlier, on arrival at Addis Ababa and being received by the Ethiopian PM, he wrote: “Honoured by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s gesture of welcoming me at the airport.”

“Ethiopia is a nation with great history and vibrant culture. India and Ethiopia share deep civilisational ties. I look forward to engaging with the Ethiopian leadership to further strengthen our partnership in diverse areas.”

The PM was accorded a warm and colorful welcome at the airport, and later the Indian diaspora too welcomed him warmly with songs and dance performances.

“India and Ethiopia share historical relations anchored in strong people-to-people ties. The special gesture by the Ethiopian leadership is reflective of the importance the two countries attach to each other as Global South partners,” a readout said.

The two leaders had met last month in Johannesburg, on the sidelines of G20 summit and held discussions on boosting ties in sectors like technology, skilling and more.

During his two-day stay, PM Modi will hold high-level bilateral talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, aimed at deepening cooperation across multiple sectors, including agriculture, investment, and development.
